January 2012 New
Year, New Faces
At the
end of the Autumn Term, we were sad to say goodbye to Miss Leyman, who left
Lovington to further her career with a full time teaching post at Longvernal
Primary School in Midsomer Norton.
We wish her success in her new appointment.
Joining us this term we are very pleased to welcome Miss Charlotte Guest who
will be teaching class 2 on Thursdays and Fridays. We are sure she is going to
be a tremendous asset to the school.
We have also extended a warm Lovington welcome to 5 new children who have joined
us this term. |

16 December 2011 Christmas at Lovington
The last week of term was busy with Christmas activities and fun
for the children at Lovington. As well as the visit of Father Christmas, there
was the annual Christmas carol service which this year was held in school rather
than at the church due to the bad weather. Many parents and friends joined the
children in the service led by Sue Kellagher from Castle Cary church. As always
the singing and readings were excellent and it was a lovely way to remember the
reason for the Christmas celebrations.
At the football club that afternoon, a derby match was contested between teams
captained by Mrs Marsland and Miss Leyman. Miss Leyman's team wisely let Mrs
Marsland win (It's always best to let the Headteacher win!)
On the last day of term, after a fun swim at Wincanton for class 2, all the
children and staff were treated to a delicious lunch prepared by the PTA with
crackers, party hats and even the opportunity to decorate their own cakes. This
was followed by the class Christmas parties and a celebration assembly - a great
way to end the term. Merry Christmas everybody!
As always see more great photos in the
gallery. |

13 December 2011 Santa
Lands at Lovington
Lovington children had a very exciting surprise visitor during
the last week of term when Father Christmas came to see them. However this time
he left his reindeer at home and landed in a helicopter courtesy of RNAS Yeovilton! The school children, joined by children from Brue Farm Nursery and
members of Lovington's toddler group, watched excitedly as the helicopter came
in to land on the school field and shouted out in amazement when they saw the
red-clad figure jump out clutching a big sack!
Father Christmas waved off the helicopter and then joined the children in the
hall where he distributed presents and answered questions about the helicopter
(apparently Rudolph and co had better watch out!) Back on the field, the
helicopter landed again to whisk him off to his next call but not before
circling the school a few times to wave goodbye.
There are some great photos of the visit in our
gallery. |

December 2011 Christmas
Performances
Lovington's Christmas productions were a hit again this year.
For the very first time, Class 1 were joined by children from Brue Farm nursery
in their nativity play 'The Sleepy Shepherd'. Playing to packed audiences of
parents, all the children sang and acted beautifully with the sheep, shepherds
and angels from the nursery adding extra charm.
In the evenings, Class 2 took to the stage in a production of 'Scrooge. a ghost
of a chance'. Once again the singing was excellent with some notable solos,
especially Jake from year 5 who was a brilliant Scrooge. There are lots of super
photos in our

10 November 2011 Lovington
Remembers
Lovington children took part in remembrance activities again
this year. We enjoyed the visit of a World War 2 veteran,
87 year old Alan Fardon
who talked to the whole school about his experiences.
The children were fascinated to hear about his time in Italy where he served in
the artillery corps and sustained a head injury when he was hit by shrapnel.
On Remembrance Sunday itself,
11
children accompanied by Mrs Marsland joined in the annual parade in Castle Cary
and presented a wreath from the school at the war memorial. |

26 September 2011 Lovington's
Harvest
Children at Lovington have been harvesting the fruits of their labours this
week. Throughout the spring and summer, at
gardening club, they have enjoyed digging, sowing seeds, weeding, watering and
watching the plants grow and the fruit and vegetables mature. They have tasted
strawberries, peas, French beans, lettuces, tomatoes and potatoes fresh from the
plant and discovered the delicious flavours that are lost in supermarket
processing. Club members are pictured holding some of the produce they picked
for the schools harvest festival which was held in Lovington Church. The
produce was later added to the auction at the PTAs harvest supper, helping to
raise funds for the school. |

August 2011 Lovington's
very own author!
Here at Lovington we are very proud of Mrs Nicky Allis, one of
our Teaching Assistants, who has just had her first children's book published!
'Dilys and the Chocolate Egg' tells the true story of the day cheeky Dilys, Mrs
Allis' 7-year-old pugalier, discovered a chocolate Easter Egg.
Dilys has visited school on several occasions and we know she has had many
adventures so we are looking forward to reading more books about her!
The book is dedicated to James Hurst and Nicky is donating her royalties to
CLIC, the children's cancer charity that supported James and his family. Find
out more about the book on Nicky's website

21 July 2011 Last
Day at Lovington!
It's always sad to say goodbye but the last day of term was a
day of celebration too. Starting with our Leavers' service at Lovington Church,
led by Lay Reader, Buff Powell, in which the year 6s took part with readings and
prayers and received a gift of a bible each from the 6 Pilgrims churches. As
always the singing was beautiful and there was hardly a dry eye in the church
during the singing of our specially adapted version of 'He's got the whole word
in His hands.' After the final walk back to school complete with the traditional
shout under the bridge, the day was filled with swimming and games before the
closing Celebration Assembly in the afternoon during which the Year 6s were
presented with their books - this year they all received the book written by the
author they had met a few weeks ago. This was when we also bade a sad farewell
to Mrs Preston, who was also leaving. We thank her for all her hard work at
Lovington and wish her every happiness in her new job.
The day ended with a family barbecue organised by the PTA. A lovely afternoon
and a fitting end to the school year. |

18 - 20 July 2011 A
Busy End of Term
The last week of term saw a whole host of activities. Each day
had a different theme starting on Monday with a science fair. Each Year 6 child
had researched a different science topic and the other children spent the day
visiting each presentation and trying out the many hands-on experiments they had
prepared. There was a whole range of topics including making bath bombs or lava
lamps, seeing how sound can make things move, discovering what happens when a
meteorite hits the earth and how to make a volcano! Lots of fun learning.
Tuesday was our Zambian themed outdoor playday. The children enjoyed a carousel
of activities including a story trail, making wooden beads, natural sculpture
and building a fire then sharing songs and jokes around it. In the afternoon,
assisted by some visiting Zambian students, they all enjoyed building dens in
the field.
Wednesday saw the whole school family trip to Avon Valley country Park (photos

12 - 14 July 2011 Technicolour
Triumph
The culmination of weeks of learning songs, rehearsing, making
costumes and props and painting scenery, the end of year production of Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat was truly amazing both visually and
musically! All the children participated in the show, in which all the parts are
sung. Well done to everyone who took part. Lead roles were taken by Hannah
Goodliff (Joseph), Phoebe Hall and Alice Stuckey (Narrators), Jamie Bradford
(Jacob) and Ryan Clarke (Pharaoh).
For a school the size of Lovington to produce such a high quality show is quite
remarkable and continues the tradition of great music and performance. Thanks to
Mrs Marsland and Mrs Allis for bringing it all together and special thanks to
Mrs McKenzie for all her work on the props and scenery (the camels were
especially memorable!)

27 June - 1 July 2011 Health
week
This week was packed with activities which helped to teach the
children how to keep healthy and safe. There were workshops on healthy eating,
internet safety, first aid, cycle safety and dealing with worries. We welcomed
visits from a dietician and a dental nurse and the children all had the chance
to practise golf and basketball skills with visiting coaches. They also enjoyed
participating in different sports and fitness activities and lots of swimming.
The children all enjoyed the week and it gave them plenty to think about. |

29 June 2011 Sports
Day
It was lovely weather this year for our sports day.
During the morning everyone took part in individual challenges collecting points
for their house teams. A wide range of different skills were needed for these
including jumping, throwing, skipping, balancing and 'hula hooping'.
After a swim and lunch it was time for the more traditional races with the
children cheered on by an enthusiastic audience of family and friends. Toddlers
and parents also had the chance to run their own races which turned out to be
very competitive! When the points were added up the winning team, Connock, were
presented with the trophy. |

24 June 2011 Sleepover
Not content with spending the whole week at school, many children stayed on for
a sleepover organised by the PTA. After being well fed, the children enjoyed an
evening of swimming, playing board games and football, using the wheeled toys
and watching DVDs and they even managed to get some sleep. It was declared a
very successful event. |

21 June 2011 Wells
Cathedral Leavers Day
Our year 6 children, accompanied by
Mrs Bradford, Mrs Butcher and Mrs Simmonds had a great day at Wells Cathedral,
celebrating their time at primary school and looking forward to moving on to
secondary. The day started with a massive Mexican wave which went the whole
length of the cathedral. Then we were divided into groups to experience a
variety of different activities including storytelling, tours of the cathedral,
drumming and the always popular mime workshop.
The day ended with a short act of worship where Millie and Wesley carried our
new banner to the front of the cathedral, Alice and Jamie collected the candle
from the alter and we were very proud as Phoebe was selected to read her prayer
for the congregation. |

New Banner
A group of children have been helping to design
and make a new school banner. The brief was to produce a banner that was
eye-catching, colourful and represented life at Lovington. We are extremely
proud of the end result which will go with the year 6 children to the leavers
service at Wells Cathedral.
Well done and thank you to Alice, Emily, Millie, Anya, Idris and Mrs Simmonds.

17 June 2011 Memorial Shelter Opening
Children, staff, parents and friends gathered to remember James Hurst, a pupil of Lovington School who died last year, and celebrate the opening of an outdoor shelter in his memory. James' mum cut the ribbon, declaring the shelter open after a short service of dedication led by our local Lay Reader, Buff Powell. The shelter was decorated with red and yellow ribbons and balloons and among the visitors were some of James' friends who were allowed to come back to Lovington from their secondary school for the day. For the rest of the day, the children took part in outdoor art activities, enjoyed a treasure hunt, swam in the pool and baked cakes which were later sold in a cake sale, raising over 100 for CLIC, the children's cancer charity which supported James and his family. The shelter reflects James' love of playing with his games console and provides a place where children can play their games outside but still be able to see the screen. It will be well used as an outdoor classroom and also provides shelter throughout the year from sun and rain. |

28 April 2011 Lovington's Royal Wedding
Lovington entered fully into the Royal Wedding celebrations, holding our own Royal Wedding Day. The highlight of the day was the Wedding service at Lovington Church with our very own William and Katherine aka Jack and Maisie from class 2. Supported by the Lovington Royal family and principal guests as well as a bevy of beautiful bridesmaids and handsome pages, the couple were 'married' by Rev Paddy Craig. As the congregation of schoolfriends and parents watched, the ceremony was sealed with the exchange of rings (one of which was a jelly sweet!) During the service Rev Craig explained each part of the ceremony and there was a chance for the children to ask questions afterwards. It was lovely to hear the church bell ringing as we walked up the hill and to see the church decorated with flowers for the occasion.
The children dressed in atriotic red, white and blue for the day and back at school took part in lots of Royal Wedding themed activities including icing cakes, designing wedding outfits and making commemorative plates and flags. The celebrations ended with a street party in the playground which included the all-important speeches by the 'bride's father', 'groom' and 'best man'. Jack's speech began 'I met Maisie at playgroup!' Afterwards each child was presented with a special Royal Wedding mug by the PTA.

8 April 2011 End of Term Goodbyes
At the end of term Celebration Assembly we said goodbye to Mrs Thomas who left us after 6 years teaching in Class 1, to take up a new job and promotion. During her time at Lovington, Mrs Thomas has had a huge impact on the school life, especially in art and music. Her parting gift to the school was a trophy to be awarded each term to the child who has excelled in kindness. She presented the cup to the first winner - Eleanor from Class 1.
A big thank you goes to Mrs Thomas for all she has done at Lovington and we wish her every success in her new post. |

8 April 2011 Easter Celebration
After a very full term, we celebrated Easter with our Easter ervice at Lovington church and our traditional Easter egg hunt and competitions. The children enjoyed searching the school grounds for the important tickets that could be exchanged for chocolate eggs. This was followed by the celebration assembly at which the prizes were awarded for the Easter hat and decorated egg competitions. There was a very high quality of entries this year and a difficult job for the judges. |

13 January 2011 SS Great Britain
Class 1 have been learning about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and visited Bristol to see his famous ship at first hand. The children enjoyed exploring the ship and learning about the people who sailed in her, comparing the different classes of accommodation and seeing the massive engine. They then took part in a workshop where they re-enacted the launching of the ship complete with victorian costumes and champagne bottle and experienced some of the skills needed to build the ship.
At the end of a very full day, the coach was filled with a lot of sleepy children!

13 January 2011 Lovington Christening
As part of their RE studies on life's journeys, Class 2 held a special christening service for baby Bella, whose brother is in Class 2. She had her real christening the week before and her Mum and Dad agreed to the special ceremony which took place in Lovington Church led by Rev Paddy Craig. Children took the roles of godparents and after the ceremony there was a celebration back at school with presents and cake. All agreed it was a great way to bring their studies to life. |

December 2010 Christmas Performances
The end of the Autumn term saw all the children taking part in the annual Christmas performances. This year it was Class 1's turn to re-enact the Nativity story. Their script and songs were specially written by Mrs Thomas and everyone, including our youngest Foundation Stage children, took part, some of them singing solos beautifully.
In complete contrast, Class 2 gave us 'Boilerella' a reworking of the traditional story of 'Cinderella' taking place after central heating had been installed! The show included all the traditional elements of a pantomime - beautiful heroine, dashing hero, great songs, bad jokes and of course the dames, the show-stealing Dame Rash and the ugly sisters! Great fun was had by all.......Oh yes it was!!
The term ended with a surprise performance of 'Boilerella' by the staff with show-stopping performances by Mrs Marsland and Mrs Brunt as the ugly sisters. Photos of this performance will NOT be published!! |

14 November 2010 We Will Remember Them
Children at Lovington school have been learning the meaning of Remembrance Day and making sure the sacrifice of servicemen and women is not forgotten. Following a series of assemblies, the children created their own field of remembrance display and on Armistice Day itself, everyting stopped as they came together to join the nation in silence at 11am on 11 November. On Remembrance Sunday, a group of children from the school, accompanied by headteacher Mrs Claire Marsland, braved the dreadful weather to take part in the Remembrance Sunday parade in Castle Cary, presenting a wreath from the school in memory of the fallen.
Finally, the school welcomed a special guest to talk about her experiences during the war. Mrs Marie Botham, mother of cricket legend Sir Ian Botham, is a member of Yeovil Branch of the Royal British Legion and the children were fascinated to hear her first hand account of the air raid shelters, gas masks, evacuation and her own nursing role. She also spoke about rationing and coupons, bringing with her examples of the food that made up a typical family's weekly ration. The children were shocked to see how little they would have had to live on. Lee from year 4 commented afterwards ' Her talk was interesting and fun and I enjoyed hearing about her being a nurse.' He was so interested that he later produced his own powerpoint presentation about what he had heard. |

9 October 2010 Carnival Success
Lovington took part in the Castle Cary and Ansford children's carnival on Saturday 9 October. Thirty children joined our entry 'Follow the Yellow Brick Road' bsed on our summer production of 'The Wizard of Oz'. The entry was highly commended before the parade and thanks to the children's enthusiasm and and their singing throughout the parade we were awarded the prize for 'Most Entertaining Entry'. We are also proud of our very own Tin Man - aka Mrs Allis - who won the trophy for 'Best Dressed Adult'. As always the children were a credit to the school and it was great to see so many taking part.
Well done, too, to the following children who won prizes in the carnival poster competition :- Alice Stuckey, Lydia Wells, Ryan Cawley and Bronwyn Hall. |

6 October 2010 Fantastic Fundraisers
The school year has only just begun but Lovington's fantastic fundraisers have been hard at work with amazing results.
The latest event was a coffee morning in Castle Cary market hall on Saturday 2 October. Shoppers in the town found the smell of cooking bacon hard to resist and many stopped to enjoy a drink and a bacon roll. They were then able to choose from a mouthwatering array of home made cakes from the cake stall and try their luck on the tombollas and raffle. (The chocolate tombolla is becoming a firm favourite at Lovington events.)
This was the third event this year after the Locals and Yokels show and the Harvest Supper and raised over 550 bringing the total raised in four short weeks to more than 2000. This is a fantastic achievement in such a small school and reflects the strength of support Lovington enjoys from the school family and the wider community. A huge 'Thank You' must be given to all those who contributed either by organising, donating or supporting the events. What a great team! |

16 September 2010 Record Number of Visitors at Lovington
For the first time ever, our year 5 and 6 children took part in the annual Ansford School sponsored walk, walking the 5 miles from Lovington School to Ansford fuelled by bacon rolls provided for them at the start by our PTA.
As the halfway point of the main walk we welcomed children, staff and parents from Ansford, Castle Cary and North Cadbury School who stopped at Lovington for refreshments, a 'comfort break' and a rest. Over the course of the day over 800 children visited us over the course of the day and it was great to see some of our former pupils who had moved on to Ansford.
The Lovington children will be using the money they raised in sponsorship towards an outdoor shelter in memory of James Hurst. |

11 September 2010 Locals and Yokels Show
The school year got off to a successful start as the children prepared entries for the Locals and Yokels show held at the Travellers Rest. The display of wooden spoon characters, decorated paper plates, paintings and drawings looked amazing and gave the judges a very difficult job. Congratulations to all the winners. The PTA supported by running a number of popular games stalls and entertainment was ensured as children and adults took turns in the ring in a superhero boxing match (see the photos in our gallery).
We are extremely grateful to Ian and Sally for raising money for Lovington School through this event which has become an important event in our fundraising calendar. |

17 June 2010 Leavers Day at Wells
On the morning of Thursday the 17 June the year 6 went to Wells Cathedral with Mrs Marsland and Mrs Simmonds. When they got there they joined hundreds of children from other church schools in the Cathedral and they had their opening service. They were split into groups and did two workshops in the morning then they met up for lunch in the cathedral garden. I was told that my prayer was picked to be read in the service and as I didnt want to read it out Jess said she would. After lunch we had one more workshop and then we went to our last service. Charlotte and Tom carried our banner, Jess read the prayer and some of our group played with the drummers. After we sang a song and prayed for James, Brea and I went to the front to collect our candle.
On the way back to the cars we wet to the bookshop and chose our leavers books (it was hard to choose) then we went back to school.

29 May 2010 Talented Musicians
On Wednesday 29th May, Lovington School had a school concert. At the beginning, class 2 played the Titanic theme and Mrs Marsland said:
'I hope you don't get a sinking feeling at the beginning of the concert.' Mrs Simmonds was filming the whole concert from the back of our school hall. Some children did solos, some played the violin and some played trumpets and trombones. Class 2 played recorder pieces which included the notes B, A, G, D and E. At the end, all the children who were at the concert sang the story of the Pied Piper. Hannah, Lydia, Alice, Anya and Tilley sang solos.

April 2010 Pet Parade
During National Pet Month, Lovington school held a pet week during which we had many visits from dogs, puppies, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, tortoises and snakes. The children and staff who brought in their own pets talked to the classes about the animals and how to take care of them.
Ryan in year 5, who brough his pet tortoise to school said, 'I liked to see all the animals. I brought a tortoise, Ryan and Harry brought guinea pigs and Mrs Marsland brought her dog Sam.'
Mrs Marsland said it took Sam a whole week to recover from his day in school. |

March 2010 A Day of Exciting Activities
Michael, Tom, Lyndon and Brea went on a course at Sexeys School. We did orienteering and team work in the swimming pool. We had to transport our group across the pool and back. It was REALLY HARD!
There were 4 groups. Michael was on his own, Tom and Brea were together and Lyndon was on his own. We went up on the top field and we played several games. We had a score for our teams and they added all the points up at the end.
We had lunch and then played rocket ball. To play rocket ball, you have a pole with two scoops on the ends and 5 balls. You have to hit the opposite team with the ball. (Head shots don't count.)
When they announced the winners, Lyndon's team came 3rd, Tom and Brea's team came 2nd and Michael's team came 1st. Michael was really happy because he came 1st! We all had fun!!

March 2010 New School Dinners
Starting 4th of January, the children of our school have been having school dinners from Ansford secondary school. I asked a few children what they think of the new dinners. I asked some children who have school dinners what their favourite food is.
Tom in year 2 from class 1 said:
'They're yummy! I really like the fish and chips.'
Alex in year 6 from class 2 said:
'Very good, I really like the new sandwich option.'
Iona in year 3 from class 2 said:
'My favourite food they have produced is Spaghetti Bolognese with garlic bread.'

3 March 2010 World Record Mathematicians
For the second year running, the children at Lovington School joined children around the world in a record breaking maths challenge. Wednesday 3 March was World Maths Day and children around the world competed against each other in live online maths games aiming to set a new world record for the most questions correctly answered in 48 hours. The challenge lasted as long as it was 3 March anywhere in the world and children were able to participate at school and at home.
All the children at Lovington joined in from the youngest Foundation Stage children to the oldest in year six. Many of them logged on at home too and between them answered a grand total of 34,737 questions correctly, smashing last years score of 9,480 and helping to set a new world record of 555,980,442questions answered worldwide. |

28 February 2010 Babcary Runners
On Sunday 28 February the lanes around Babcary resounded to the footsteps of runners participating in the annual 7.5 mile Babcary Road Race. Among them were four from Lovington, Mr Wells, Mrs Tubridy, Mrs Pick and Mrs Simmonds. Well done to all of them for completing the distance in great times and especially to Mr Wells and Mrs Tubridy who ran the race as a sponsored event, raising money for the school.
Children from Lovington also took part in the children's races which were also run as part of the event. |

29 January 2010 SOS Fundraisers
Lovington School helped to save lives at sea by supporting the RNLI SOS appeal for the third year in a row. The fundraising event was launched as the whole school gathered to hear Tony Deahl the Education Officer from Burnham-On-Sea Lifeboat Station, explain the work of the RNLI. Tony also brought some genuine Lifeboat crew kit which the children enjoyed trying on.
This was followed by a day where the children, following the SOS theme, were 'Serious Over Sport'. They came to school dressed in sports kit and took part in a variety of sports activities throughout the day, also entering colouring competitions. The whole event was organised by the School Council and Sports Captains. Headteacher Claire Marsland said, ' I was really impressed by how well they worked together and organised themselves. They did a super job and have raised 60 for a very worthy cause.'
The children are now keen to arrange a visit to the Lifeboat Station in the summer. |

21 January 2010 Hockey Tournament
On a very cold Thursday, 10 children took part in an inter-school hockey tournament at Sunny Hill School in Bruton. As always we were the smallest team taking part and the only school with children under 9 playing. Undaunted, the team played with the renowned Lovington School spirit and determination. They played 6 games, drawing 3 and losing 3, coming 6th out of 7 teams taking part. They were a credit to the school and you can see some action photos in our gallery (Click the photo to see them). |

10 January 2010 Monday 11 January - School Open
School will be open for pupils at the usual times on Monday 11 January but please note the following arrangements:
- The approach road to the school is still untreated and very slippery, please be extremely careful when driving or walking;
- There will be NO PARKING at school. We have been able to clear enough of the car park to provide a 'Drop off' area for pupils so that parents can drive away immediately while the children are escorted into school;
- The road from North Barrow is still very slippery and we advise parents to use a different route to school if possible;
- Children do not need to wear uniform, but should wear warm clothes and bring wellies and a change of clothes;
- Please bring a packed lunch as we are not sure if hot lunches will be available;
- There will be NO AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS, we will advise you when they will restart.
Above all, please take extreme care when driving to school.

9 to 13 November 2009 Key Stage 2 Residential
School was very quiet all week after we waved the key stage 2 children off on their annual residential trip. This year they went to Osmington Bay near Weymouth and spent the week taking part in a science adventure that included all kinds of exciting indoor and outdoor activities - see the photos on our gallery pages. Despite some initial worries about staying away from home, all the children had a great time, as did Mrs Marsland, Mrs Brunt and Mrs Allis, who took rather longer to recover afterwards!

5 October 2009 Harvest Celebrations
Thankfully the rain held off for our walk to Lovingon Church for our annual Harvest thanksgiving service. For the reception children it ws their first experience of the walk to church and the traditional shout under the railway bridge. They literally took it all in their strides, paired up with their reading buddies and carrying their harvest gifts. All took part in a joyful service with rousing songs and beautifully read lessons and prayers. After the walk back to school (and more shouting) they enjoyed a delicious snack of fresh bread and jam.
The evening celebration, a harvest supper and auction was very well attended by parents and friends who all had such an enjoyable time that they obviously didn't notice how much they were bidding as a fantastic 750 was raised for the school. Thank you very much to the hard workers of the PTA who once again put on a very successful and enjoyable event.

The children have enjoyed trying out the PE equipment that has been received through the Sainsburys Active Kids programme. A big 'Thank you' to parents and friends who collected vouchers when they did their shopping. We were able to exchange them for a range of items that will enable us to bring more variety to our PE lessons, sports days and our daily shake up sessions. As you can see in the photo all the children enjoyed tackling an assault course as their afternoon 'shake up' this week.

13 September 2009 Parish Welcomes Mrs Marsland
On Sunday the Six Pilgrims Benefice formally welcomed Mrs Marsland as Headteacher of Lovington School. (Although she hardly seems new, having been at the school as Interim Headteacher before being appointed to the permanent post.) Many children and their families attended the service and the children took a major part, reading, acting out the story of creation (and encouraging the rest of the congregation to join in too) - and it wouldn't be Lovington without some very lively songs. Mrs Marsland gave a short talk, introducing herself and her aspirations for the school before being presented with a book of prayers by churchwarden and former Headteacher Joyce Atkinson.

5 September 2009 Locals and Yokels Show
Once again this year our friends Sally and Ian from the Travellers Rest organised their show to raise funds for our school. The children enjoyed preparing their entries for the competitions and there was a wonderful array of mini-scarecrows, vegetable animals and paintings. Not to mention the photographic, craft and cookery entries from parents, staff and other 'Locals and Yokels'. Despite dissappointing weather the show raised 500. Congratulations to all the prizewinners and a HUGE thank you to Sally and Ian. |

24 June 2009 Wells Cathedral Leavers Service
The year 6 children spent the day at Wells Cathedral today for the annual Church Schoool Leavers day. Entitled 'Spirit of Wells' the day included workshops and a special service and the children enjoyed a mime workshop, storytelling sessions, den building and a tour of the Cathedral and grounds. The service began with a very moving parade of the school banners through the majestic cathedral and we were very proud that Bethany Clarke and Katie White were chosen to lead the congregation in prayer. Marking the cathedral's 1100 anniversary, the children were all presented with a book as a souvenir of the occasion. |

22 May 2009 Health and Safety - Top of the form
Lovington School scored a very impressive 99.52% in the recent health and safety inspection.
In the words of the inspector ' Lovington is providing a safe environment for staff, pupils, visitors and contractors. Headteacher, Claire Marsland has been very well supported by Health and Safety governor, Damien Pick, in developing and maintaining excellent safety management systems. Governors and staff are clearly very aware of the importance of Health and Safety and all deserve recognition for the part they play..........If only all audits were like this........... It was a pleasure to audit the school and this is an excellent report. Only one school to date has achieved a perfect audit and you were extremely close. Well done'
As everyone involved with the school knows the children at Lovington have lots of fun and it is good to recognise that this can be achieved without compromising Health and Safety.

22 May 2009 School Concert
Last night's summer concert was a resounding success with over 30 children taking part. An impressive range of talent was on display from individual children singing solos or playing instruments they have been learning at school, to ensembles and larger groups including performances from the ukulele band, the brass ensemble and the debut performance of 'The Band'. The choir sang the lively songs they had performed at the South Somerset Music Spectacular as well as a medley of Abba songs and the evening came to a rousing close in 'Last Night of the Proms' style with Land of Hope and Glory performed by the orchestra.

21 May 2009 Netball - a great result
Another 'Well Done' to our netball team who took part in a tournament at Ansford school. Not only did they look very smart in their new kit, but they also played brilliantly and achieved some excellent scores, notably an 8-1 victory against Evercreech school. In their other matches they lost to Keinton Mandeville and drew 2-2 with Castle Cary.
Well done girls, a fantastic end the season and many thanks to coaches Mrs Seager and Mrs Goodliffe for all their hard work. |

8 May 2009 Cross Country Champions
Well done to the 18 Key Stage 2 children who took part in the annual Cross Country competition at Castle Cary Primary School. All of them ran really well and completed the course which is not easy - there are some very tough hills. Our top results were:
Brea Lucas - 1st girl in the Year 5/6 race,
Katie White - 2nd girl in the Year 5/6 race and
Daryl Stoodley - 5th boy in the Year 5/6
Brea and Katie were both presented with medals.
2 April 2009 Mrs Amanda Seager
We congratulate Mrs Amanda Seager on her appointment as Deputy Headteacher at St JohnsInfant School in Glastonbury from September. We wish her success in her new post. Amanda has made a significant impact on the school during the eight years that she has been here, and will be sadly missed by staff, pupils, parents and Governors. However, a Deputy Headship is clearly a fantastic and well-deserved opportunity, which she must pursue. The Governors and I have already started the process to recruit an experienced Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 teacher to replace Amanda. We will keep you informed of our progress. I would personally like to thank Amanda for her hard work, good humour and her invaluable support this year; my first year of Headship. It has been very much appreciated! I am sure that you will all join with me in congratulating Amanda on her appointment, and will work closely with me to ensure that she has very happy and memorable last term at Lovington!
Permanent Headteacher appointed
The governors of Lovington Church of England Primary school are pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs Claire Marsland as Headteacher from September 2009. Claire joined us last September as interim headteacher after the departure of Judith Barrett and has made a significant and positive impact on the school in the time that she has been with us. We are delighted to have been able to appoint her to the permanent post and are looking forward to continuing to work with her to build on the school's success and develop it further. Claire comes to us from Rockwell Green school near Wellington, where she was Deputy Head. She is a talented musician and enjoys golf and football, being a keen supporter of Portsmouth FC. We wish her every success and happiness in our school.
